Helen Oxenbury is a successful English illustrator and writer of children’s picture books: she has twice won the prestigious British Librarians’ Award for illustration, the Kate Greenaway Medal and has been a runner-up on four occasions.
In 2005, for the 50th anniversary of the Kate Greenaway Medal, Helen Oxenbury’s edition of ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ was named as one of the top ten winning works.
Helen was born in 1938 and grew up in Ipswich. She has enjoyed drawing all her life and attended the Ipswich School of Art during her teens, before going to London’s Central School of Art and Design where she met her future husband John Burningham, who is also a children’s illustrator.
Although Helen set out initially for a career in theatre, film and television, she has been an illustrator since 1964. In 1994, Helen’s ‘Tom and Pippo’ stories were adapted into a French animated series of 104 short episodes.
More recently, some of Helen’s work has included the illustrations for ‘The Growing Story’ in Bayard Presse’s StoryBox magazine.
