Lauren Child MBE, is an English writer and illustrator who was recently coronated the 10th Children’s Laureate in June 2017. She is best known for her Charlie & Lola and Clarice Bean picture books and novels which she writes and illustrates herself. Although Child always knew she would like a career that involved drawing, it was many years before she decided what format her first character, Clarice Bean would take. Her inspiration came after watching Tim Burton’s film Edward Scissorhands and as a result she is keen to encourage children to think freely and to spend time ‘staring out of the window’ to allow ideas to flow naturally and not to be restricted by compartmentalising ideas. Lauren Child lives in North London with her husband and 2 year old daughter, who they adopted from Mongolia after Child had been working there as a Unesco (artist for peace). Child is a keen campaigner against child poverty.
