Artist Spotlight Sherree Valentine Daines

From Canvas to Life

Here we are deep into Summer, the calendar - as usual - filled with traditionally British sporting and social events - Royal Ascot, test cricket, Wimbledon and more.

Here at The Rose Gallery, such events bring to mind one exceptional artist who has captured the spirit of these occasions in a way no one else has.

Known as ‘The Face of Modern British Impressionism,’ Sherree Valentine Daines captivates art lovers worldwide with her ability to capture poignant moments, whether of family trips to the seaside or the British sporting and social season. Her distinctive style brings landscapes to life, often painting outside to capture a moment directly and authentically reflect the natural light in her scenes.

Born in Effingham, Surrey in 1956, Sherree comes from a highly artistic family—her father a sculptor and stonemason. After studying at Epsom School of Art, she quickly made her mark, winning multiple competitions and awards. Her artistic approach blends classical training with an impressionistic sensibility, capturing not just appearances but her own genuine impressions of her subjects.

What characterises Sherree’s work is the way she paints real life as it unfolds, resulting in beautifully captured glimpses. Whether setting up her easel outdoors to paint landscapes and the people who wander into them, or inviting subjects to sit for portraits, her pieces reflect authentic moments. Her work captures both the physical scene and the emotional atmosphere, creating evocative pieces that transport us.

Beyond the canvas, Sherree balances her prolific artistic career with family life. Married to fellow artist Mark Rowbotham, she enjoys spending time with her grandchildren and elderly parents. Her daughters, grandchildren, and even son-in-laws modelled for her during the pandemic when she created domestic and social scenes in her stunning countryside garden. Such a creative atmosphere has obviously influenced her children with her son Charlie also painting, daughter Lettice becoming a world-renowned violinist, Bunty a sculptor and fine artist, and Felicity an artist and ceramicist.

Sherree continues to generously give to numerous charitable causes, including collaborations with prestigious institutions and painting portraits of celebrities for charitable organisations.

This May, we were excited to unveil some new pieces by Sherree, capturing the spirit of Summer and brightening our days - you can see them here
