Tony Hinchliffe is an artist specialising in Portraits and Landscape paintings, based in Northamptonshire.
Tony has always been drawn to the sense of escapism that comes with creating art. Passionate about exploring creativity, they are constantly developing their techniques to maintain a feeling of energy and movement within his work. A key motivation comes from emotionally connecting with viewers, finding fulfilment in creating paintings that resonate on a personal level.
Working primarily with oil paint, they often begin with an acrylic underpainting, enjoying the way oil behaves when layered over acrylic. In the early stages, oil paint is frequently diluted with turpentine and applied with a watercolour-like fluidity.
His figurative painting focuses on capturing mood and intimacy within fleeting moments. Using loose, spontaneous brushwork balanced with carefully placed contrasting values, they create depth and atmosphere within each composition. Thousands of hours spent drawing the figure from life have been fundamental to the development of this style, allowing for close observation of subtle body language that suggests narrative, rooted in the belief that everyone deserves to feel loved.
Alongside his studio practice, Tony teaches figure drawing and painting, continually refining and evolving his process. Inspiration is drawn largely from the outdoors, observing people, oceans, landscapes, and skies in all weather conditions. A painting is considered successful when it recalls the emotions felt during its creation, much like rereading a diary.
