Martin Leighton

Born in Montrose, Scotland, in 1951, Martin Leighton has lived on the Dorset coast since the age of two. Based in Weymouth, the dramatic coastline, surrounding countryside and ever-changing natural light have provided a lifelong source of inspiration. A self-taught British artist, Martin has painted professionally since 2003, specialising in original oil paintings on canvas. His diverse work spans coastal scenes, landscapes, wildlife, still life and portraiture, with figurative painting remaining his greatest passion. Working primarily from life, Martin combines careful observation with a painterly approach, capturing not only physical likeness but also character and emotion. His sensitive use of natural light and expressive detail creates paintings that are realistic, warm and engaging. His enduring connection to Dorset continues to shape his work, resulting in atmospheric paintings that invite viewers to pause and connect with the scene.
